Voter Registration 

Voter Registration is an online tool that allows eligible Ontario electors to confirm, update, add or remove their voter information for Ontario provincial and local elections including elections for municipal council members, district social services administration board (DSSAB) members and school board trustees.


The Register


The Register is a list of individuals eligible to vote in provincial and/or local elections in Ontario. Eligibility requirements are different for provincial and local elections.

You can use the Voter Registration tool to confirm, update add or remove your information from the Register if you:

  • have changed your name or address
  • own or rent a new property
  • no longer own or rent a property
  • want to remove your information
  • want to remove the information of a deceased person

You will need to provide one piece of ID and/or other required documentation

To be eligible to update, add or remove yourself from the Register, you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older, 
  • a Canadian citizen, and
  • a resident of Ontario

Accepted ID includes most documents issued by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario or a municipality in Ontario, showing both your name and home address.  You can also use a bank statement, a credit card statement or a utility bill. The ID you provide must include both your name and home address.

Property documentation includes documents issued by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario or a municipality in Ontario.

An application submitted by anyone other than the person named in the application will not be processed.

As per the Election Act, Elections Ontario is responsible for maintaining the Permanent Register of Electors for Ontario, commonly known as the Register, which includes eligibility to register for provincial and local elections. 

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation is legislatively required to collect school support information. You can update your school support designation through MPAC.

If you are temporarily living outside of Ontario, but intend to return to Ontario, you may use Voter Registration to add yourself to the Register of Absentee Voters or update your information using ID that proves your Ontario residence.


Register of Absentee Voters


Eligible voters who reside in Ontario are included on the Register.

Eligible voters who are temporarily residing outside of Ontario and intend to return to the province may be eligible as an absentee voter.

Register of Absentee Voters is only for eligible provincial electors.

As an absentee voter, a voting kit with a write-in ballot will be mailed to you at the mailing address provided if an election is called in your electoral district. Absentee voters can only vote by mail. 

To be eligible to update, add or remove yourself from the Register of Absentee Voters, you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • temporarily residing outside of Ontario;
  • a resident of Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months before leaving; and
  • intent on returning to Ontario.

You are eligible as an absentee voter for up to two years from the date you left Ontario, unless you are exempt from the two-year limit

The two-year limit begins from the date you leave Ontario, not the date you apply to be an absentee voter.

The ID you provide must include both your name and current home address.

Documentation for proof of occupation or educational attendance includes Canadian Forces Identification Card, Government Identification Card, official enrollment letter.

If your residence is in Ontario, you do not qualify as an absentee voter. Voters who reside in Ontario and are travelling outside the province during an election, and are unable to vote in person or at their returning office, can apply to vote by mail

Yes. Active-duty members of the armed forces of Canada or employees of government institutions such as Global Affairs Canada who prefer to have their voting kit delivered through internal military or diplomatic channels, we accept a Canadian delivery address and a third-party local contact to receive the voting kit with a write in ballot for mailing purposes.

Please note that we have no control over internal delivery times.


Ontario Register of Future Voters


The Ontario Register of Future Voters is a list of eligible 16- and 17-year-olds who will be automatically added to the Register when they turn 18.

To be eligible to update, add or remove yourself from the Register of Future Voters, you must be:

  • 16 or 17 years old;
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of Ontario

Once transferred to the Register, you will be registered to vote in Ontario provincial and local elections and will receive a voter information card in the mail before the next Ontario provincial election.

Accepted ID includes your school transcript or report card; a cellular phone bill; or any document issued by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario or a municipality in Ontario. The ID you provide must include both your name and current home address.

Security and Privacy


Elections Ontario is committed to respecting your privacy and protecting your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Personal information is collected under the authority of the Elections Act, the Election Finances Act, the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and/or other legislation.  This information will be used for electoral purposes and may be used to conduct election research.  Your personal information may be shared internally at Elections Ontario for the purposes outlined above and will be securely destroyed one year after its last use or later, where legislatively required. Questions about the collection can be directed to: priv@elections.on.ca.

Elections Ontario may share voter information with Elections Canada, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation and some municipalities, as requested. Information is shared for election purposes only. 

The Elections Ontario Privacy Policy has more information about who voter registration information is shared with and how that information is protected. 

Elections Ontario asks for a phone number and email address during the registration process in case we need to contact you about your request. This information is not shared.

Elections Ontario has taken precautions to make sure that information entered on a shared computer is not available to other users.

This includes clearing any information entered once the request has been submitted and a session timeout in case a computer is left unattended.

The Voter Registration website has been designed to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) WCAG 2.0 Level AA guidelines and has been tested to function with screen readers.
